For Mother's Day, Mr. Wright bought me 3 tickets to see Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at Hale Center Theatre. Spitfire was with her grandma in St. George, so we decided to invite my Kid Sister, and pay the difference between the child seat and the adult seat.
Before attending the show, I learned that the man who directed the show, was also the choreographer, AND the male Lead.
I have seen the movie, with the same title, starring Steve Martin and Michael Caine. In the movie, it was apparent right away that the characters were con-artists. This was not very apparent in the opening scene/musical number. It seemed as though the women were just giving Lawrence their jewelry because he was charming, and they wanted to marry him, not that he was conning them out of their jewelry. It also wasn't apparent at first that he wasn't really a prince.
You know how some musicals have really catchy tunes that get in your head? Not this one. Most of the musical numbers were really boring. However, there were a few songs that I liked: "Great Big Stuff", "Oklahoma", "All About Ruprecht", and "Love is My Legs".
The actor who played Freddy was fan-freakin-tastic! He had great energy on-stage, and wasn't afraid to make a fool of himself. He was utterly charming and like-able. He handled the physical comedy gags with ease. He was the most watchable character whenever he was on-stage.
I also really enjoyed the character of Jolene Oakes, the gal from Oklahoma. She was fun and lively, and silly, and over-the-top. I would like to play that part someday.
The actress who played Christine Colgate did a wonderful job as well. She had a lovely voice, without being too overpowering. She had a sweetness and innocence about her that sucked you right into the story.
Any time these three characters were on-stage, you couldn't take your eyes off of them. They were the most interesting characters to watch, and their scenes were fun.
I didn't find the play quite as funny as the movie, although it DID have some hilarious moments. Overall, it was well done and enjoyable to watch.
